Six Counties Distribution serves parcel and mail delivery contracts for businesses and domestic customers through DX Networking and UPS in the South West.
Challenge
They say it’s not what you do, it’s the way that you do it. It’s true in the competitive parcel and mail delivery sector too; picking up and delivering is vital, but it’s only half the story. Reputations and contracts are won or lost on reliability, efficiency, driver behaviour, the list is long and it all takes careful management. With a demanding UPS contract in mind, Six Counties were keen to price competitively and make savings on fuel, anything else would be a bonus.
Solution
The search for a solution took Six Counties’ Chris Mayo to the Commercial Vehicle Show at the NEC, he approached TomTom WORK and they put iTracking on the case. Chris was wary of the competition “some guys come in and want to sell you something, you take an instant disliking to them, so you don’t buy it” but iTracking was different. Chris remembers his first impressions of Clive at iTracking “A friendly bloke, the type of guy you like to do business with!” Clive’s solution was a TomTom WEBFLEET and LINK 300 tracking unit package. “Clive came in, an honest, genuine bloke… and I haven’t looked back since then!” The units were placed in 20 Six Counties vans and the wider business benefits became clear.
Result
Chris was pleased with the short-term gains “yes it saved me lots of fuel, but in three months it paid for itself for the whole year! I was chuffed to bits with it.” The effect on management was impressive too “we tracked the vans to each and every stop they made and we could see them encroaching on each others’ areas” workload is now balanced across drivers, vehicles and postcodes in order ensure that working time is fairly distributed and mileage is accrued evenly across the leased fleet.
Information from WEBFLEET also makes longer-term planning possible, holidays are now taken in the summer during slow periods and vans are taken off the road saving even more money. The fleet then runs at full strength in December during the busiest delivery period. Tracking also encourages high standards of driver behaviour any complaints being easily investigated through daily reports from WEBFLEET; personal use of vehicles or straying ‘off route’ is easily avoided too further reducing costs.
